A blood moon glared down upon those below, its monstrous gaze illuminating everything with a crimson hue. Bite cowered behind the door.
“It’s a lunar eclipse.” Daere sighed. Bite’s belief in superstition was usually rather charming but when what he thought was a bad omen presented itself the ongoing activity would drag out with Daere having to battle him with logic.
Bite rambled on “It’s a sign! A sign of pure unadulterated evil! You think it’s just a coincidence that it would be a blood moon on Halloween?”
“YES! Mystical spirits don’t control the alignment of the Star, Terra and the moons!”
“You don’t know that. No one does.”
“Alright, I’ll just go see sable without you.”
Bite crossed their arms and glanced at growl derply sat, waiting patiently.
“Fine, we’ll come too.”
The night’s breeze was cool yet refreshing making the short walk to the woods pleasant with the cover of night giving a sense of privacy and intimacy. They wondered onwards through the foliage , skipping over roots and dead branches, chatting lightly together. About their careers, about their hobbies, about friends and family, about each other, abo- Suddenly Daere slammed to the floor. Bite’s muscles sped into action leaping towards the attacker, claws bared. But, as his brain registered the identity of the “attacker” his heart rate began to return. Sable sat perched upon Daere’s stomach, Tiny posing proudly inside his visor. Styx raged while the three’s laughter filled the quiet night air. With Daere returned to his feet they went onward to Sable’s den. It was a cosy space as he had occupied a burrow underneath an ancient sycamore tree which was next to a small clearing. In the clearing he kept a fire pit surrounded by logs at a safe distance and a stump as an outside table. Inside the burrow he had low furniture and covers for the burrow’s holes, both of which had been brought to him by Daere and Bite. A light flickered in the pit, wisps of smoke floating in the air. Cobwebs hung from branches nearby; “For Halloween” Sable noted. Daere got to work putting up ghostly bunting while Bite propped up a skeleton on a nearby tree. Three large pumpkins sat on the stump. They sat and shared treats with their critters by the fire, Howl and Growl cuddled on the floor, sharing horror stories sending chills all through their bodies; each of them scarier than the last.
Bite jolted up, exclaiming “Well that’s enough for one night, time to carve the pumpkins!”
Sable scrambled over “YEAH YEAH YEAH! I found the best ones just for you guys!”
The three quickly set to work, with Bite precisely slicing with his claws, Daere clumsily hacking away with a knife and Sable ravaging his. Soon, the work was done. Bite had made an artistic masterpiece of a Jack-o’-lantern, havin given it a 3d form from carving shallow dips, its fangs crocodilian and eyes pupiled. Daere’s was rather polygonal with big accident cuts at the edges, a standard that a child might perform. Sable’s was little more than just a gaping hole in a scooped out pumpkin.
“I think we have a clear winner” jested Daere.
“Yeah, me!” Sable beamed, studying his pumpkin in awe.
They got out pie crust and baked pumpkin pie sprinkled with cinnamon over the fire which they enjoyed together under the calm canopy of the woods.
