Bugs rustled about in her logs, searching for the special rubies she had stashed just for tonight. She was so excited to show her rubies their first light show, remembering how excited and shocked she was when she first saw them herself as a youngster.
Squeaking, Bugs gathered the handful of red stones into her hand, ears twitching with excitement. Standing upright, she held them close to her chest, shaking her secondary arms with excitement.
Though tonight was the first night the lights could be out, they were never guaranteed, and she had spent many cold winter nights waiting for seemingly nothing, staring at the blank dark sky above without any flash of the exciting lights.
Bugs scuttled out of her hiding place, into the forest outside. Trees towered above, dwarfing her even more than normal, her short stature of just three feet making almost anything seem huge in comparison to her. She stood on her tiptoes on a plush pile of moss, which served essentially as a doormat for her hiding place.
A frosty breeze swept through the forest, swirling up leaves and bits of lichen off of the forest floor, sweeping them around her and making her fur stand on end.
Shaking herself out and puffing up her fur even more, she hoped the sky would be clear enough to see the lights, dreading the eventual arrival of snow. Snow always made her so mad, the freezing temperatures and frozen puddles so inconvenient and frustrating it made her want to scream sometimes.
Bugs hopped down from the moss, sprinting along the trail she had created in the undergrowth, dormant blueberry bushes and raspberry thickets nearly catching on her fur, but she expertly avoided them all.
Hopping and skipping over stones and twisted roots, she made her way out of the forest, onto the moor where she would be able to see the sky more clearly without any branches getting in the way. Bursting into the tall grass, Bugs squeaked with delight. She tumbled down into the grass, rolling playfully down the slight incline.
Landing on her back, Bugs stared up at the open sky, filled with stars. Almost holding her breath, Bugs stared and stared, waiting for the lights to appear.
Suddenly and all at once, the sky seemed to burst with light, almost like a firework went off. Blues and greens danced like ribbons across the horizon, and Bugs mirrored them, running and twisting and twirling along the moor ground, filled with joy.
As the minutes went by the lights only intensified, turning to yellow and even a few brief flashes of orange and red graced the moor.
